Who is Murtle Chickpea?
When I was little, my Mum's pet name for me was Murtle and my Dad's was Chickpea. Putting the two together just made sense.
I've been snipping up and cutting out magazines since I was 6 years old and I guess I never really stopped.
Teetering towers of books and magazines fill my studio. I use them, my hands, sharp scissors and my trusty glue stick to create collages.
A lot of my work involves cats and dolls........ cat heads on doll bodies, doll heads on human bodies..........
Recently I've wandered down a completely new path because I got a pile of nudist club magazines from the 70s. I'm having so much fun using the gorgeous and sometimes hilarious images in them. After making a dozen collages I listed one of them in my Etsy store only to find that Etsy does not allow nudity, darn it!
So I took on the task of building this website in order to share and sell my work. It's a little wonky but I think it does the trick.
I've also started creating mixed media brooches. The ingredients I use are wooden shapes, pictures and text from old books, various charms and occasionally a sprinkle of glitter.
But wait, there's more! I make zines, stickers and greeting cards too, all of which can all be purchased from my Etsy store.
In a world gone mad I sometimes wonder what the purpose of all this is. To make and create. I eventually figured it out in one word.........joy. The process alone brings me great joy and the finished product brings joy to others. And that's all it needs to be.
